For centuries, the Catholic Church has been one of the most important patrons of Art, as it was established that it should be used in the propagation of the faith. The Franciscans came to California with that idea in mind, bringing paintings and statues that depicted their saints, to be used for conversion. But how can we identify who is represented in those works? Are there clues that help us identify who is the saint we are looking at?
Helena Hazleton, Art Historian and our Museum Director, will help us discover those “clues,” and will use the Mission’s Art Collection to help us understand the symbols in the paintings and statues that adorn the walls of our Church and museum.
